DWP sponsored public bodies

The Department sponsors a wide range of bodies to achieve its objectives. These include executive, advisory and tribunal Non-Departmental Public Bodies (NDPBs), Public Corporations, as well as other arms-length and short-term bodies. Details of these bodies and their remits can be accessed via the links below.

DWP Annual Appointments Report

The DWP Annual Appointment Report provides a snapshot of the public bodies sponsored by the Department as at 31 March 2009. It also details the Ministerial appointments made during the reporting period together with a report on activity carried out to support policy objectives.

Non-Departmental Public Bodies (NDPB)

Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission

The Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission is responsible for the child maintenance system in Great Britain. Its primary objective is to maximise the number of effective child maintenance arrangements in place for children who live apart from one or both of their parents. Parents may make arrangements privately or through the statutory scheme.

The Commission is responsible for the statutory maintenance scheme (currently operated by the Child Support Agency) and Child Maintenance Options which provides free, impartial information and support to enable parents to identify and set up the most suitable maintenance arrangement for their circumstances.

Disability Rights Commission

On 1 October 2007 the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) merged into the new Equality and Human Rights Commission.

Equality 2025

Equality 2025 is a new advisory body to help Government understand the needs and wishes of disabled people when developing policies and designing service delivery.

Health and Safety Executive

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is responsible for the regulation of almost all the risks to health and safety arising from work activity in Britain. HSE’s strategy is designed to promote its vision to see health and safety as a cornerstone of a civilised society and, with that, to achieve a record of workplace health and safety that leads the world. HSE's mission, working with Local Authorities, is to protect people's health and safety by ensuring risks in the changing workplace are properly controlled.

Independent Living Funds

To provide financial assistance under the terms of the Trust deeds in an efficient cost effective way that respects and supports a disabled person's requirements for personal care and domestic assistance which enables independent living.

Industrial Injuries Advisory Council

To advise the Secretary of State on: The prescription of industrial diseases, regulations under the Social Security Administration Act 1992 and the Contributions and Benefits Act 1992, and The Industrial Injuries Benefit Scheme itself.

Pension Protection Fund

The Pension Protection Fund was established to pay compensation to members of eligible defined benefit pension schemes, when there is a qualifying insolvency event in relation to the employer and where there are insufficient assets in the pension scheme to cover Pension Protection Fund levels of compensation.

Pension Protection Fund Ombudsman

To investigate and decide on complaints about the way cases have been handled by the Pension Protection Fund Board.

Pensions Ombudsman

To investigate and decide on complaints and disputes concerning occupational & personal pension schemes. The Ombudsman is completely independent and acts as an impartial adjudicator.

Remploy Ltd

This body is run as a private company and its remit is to expand the opportunities for disabled people in sustainable employment within Remploy and the community it serves.

Social Security Advisory Committee (SSAC)

Advises on Social Security matters generally; may report on regulations referred by the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions or the Northern Ireland Department responsible for Social Security.

The Pensions Advisory Service

To provide a high quality, independent and a free of charge service to members of the public who have either a general or a specific query or complaint on a pensions matter.

Working Ventures UK

Working Ventures UK (WVUK) engages with employers and employment and skills providers to open up more and better jobs for people from disadvantaged communities.
Our Employer Coalition Network, whose members' organisation employ one in ten UK workers, provides market intelligence, a channel for influence and a test bed for new initiatives to improve the Welfare to Work system.
