The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) takes benefit theft very seriously. Although the vast majority of people who claim benefits are honest, those who commit benefit theft are picking the pockets of law-abiding taxpayers. In 2006-07 benefit thieves stole an estimated £700 million from public funds, that's why we are determined to stop benefit thieves.

As part of our ongoing approach, DWP is committed to making benefit theft harder to get away with and we are determined to detect and catch benefit thieves.
DWP has targets for reducing the amount of money lost through benefit theft. To help us to achieve these, we have a professionally trained Fraud Investigation Service with powers to investigate people suspected of all types of benefit theft offences and who can undertake interviews under caution in the same way as police.
