Notes to Editors

  1. ‘Employer responses to an ageing workforce: a qualitative study’ (DWP Research Report number 455) by Stephen McNair, Matt Flynn and Nina Dutton from the Centre for Research into the Older Workforce is published today as part of the DWP Research Report series. A copy of the report (and summary of the research) can be downloaded from the Department’s website at http://research.dwp.gov.uk/asd/asd5/rrs-index.asp
  2. The research consisted of qualitative interviews with 70 employers, drawn from 9 sectors, and with a broadly representative mix of small, medium and large firms across England. In each firm one individual was interviewed – generally either a general manager/chief executive or a senior HR professional. The study focused principally on older, rather than younger, workers. Fieldwork was conducted in summer 2006.
  3. The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations (2006) came into effect on 1st October 2006. Further details about the regulations, guidance and examples of age positive employment practices can be found on the Agepositive website (http://www.agepositive.gov.uk).
