UK Advisory Forum on Ageing
The Government outlined its commitment to citizens’ engagement in "Empowering engagement: a stronger voice for older people", published on 3 February 2009. As part of this commitment the Government has established a UK Advisory Forum on Ageing which is co-chaired by the Minister of State for Pensions and the Ageing Society and the Minister of State for Care Services.
The Forum membership includes representatives from stakeholder organisations, regional representatives from older people groups, devolved nations, Government Offices and older people themselves.
The Forum’s remit
The Forum has a clear focus on helping to improve the independence, health and wellbeing of older people through effective engagement and addressing the opportunities and challenges of an ageing society. It will ensure that the views of older people are heard and, importantly, responded to.
The Forum will:
- advise on the progress of Public Service Agreements 17 and 18 – including advice on additional steps government and partners need to take to improve the health, wellbeing and independence of older people
- advise on how to achieve wider cultural and behavioural changes
- advise on the implementation and development of "Building a society for all ages", the government’s strategy for an ageing society, in the context of creating an age-friendly society
- advise on how to improve engagement with older people
- look forward to new issues and challenges arising from demographic ageing of the UK’s population
- be outcome and action focused.

Forum meetings
The first UK Advisory Forum on Ageing took place on the 7 July where good progress was made with a challenging first agenda, and members committed to continuing a number of issues through the summer.
A special Forum event for members to consider how they can support the implementation of “Building a society for all ages” was held in late summer and useful information was obtained.
