Public Service Agreement (PSA) 17 commits the Government to “tackle poverty and promote greater independence and wellbeing in later life”. It brings together action across Government to tackle pensioner poverty and to ensure that we adapt to an ageing society by promoting greater independence and wellbeing in later life.

LinkAge Plus pilots are providing older people with access to a wide range of more integrated, joined-up services. There are eight pilots developing good practice to bring together central government, local authorities and other organisations in partnerships to deliver services focussing on local needs.
International Plan of Action on Ageing sets out the 10 commitments agreed by Governments to bring about the adjustments needed to address the challenges and opportunities of an ageing society.
Partnerships for Older People Projects (POPPs) aims to deliver and evaluate locally innovative approaches to create a sustainable shift in resources and culture away from institutional and hospital-based crisis care for older people towards earlier, targeted interventions within their own homes and communities. It is led by the Department of Health's Social Care, Local Government and Care Partnerships Directorate and delivered through 29 local authority pilots.

- Don’t stop me now – Preparing for an ageing population (July 2008) is an Audit Commission report on preparing for the opportunities and challenges of the ageing population in England (Audit Commission website).
- Sure Start to later life (January 2006) examines how to tackle exclusion in later life and sets out 30 agreed cross-government action points (Communities and Local Government website).
