Preparing for our ageing society – developing a new Government strategy
Within 20 years half of the adult UK population will be aged over 50. One in four children born today will live beyond 100. These are dramatic shifts that have far-reaching consequences for us all, and our ageing population will change our society in many ways.
To ensure that we are well placed to respond to these changes, the Government launched a discussion paper “Preparing for our Ageing Society” in November 2008.
The topics in this paper were discussed at a series of regional events attended by around 600 people. We received over 100 responses from stakeholder organisations and members of the publc to questions set out in the paper.
The responses to this discussion paper have helped inform a new strategy for our ageing society, "Building a Society for All Ages", published on 13 July 2009. The findings confirmed the four key themes we had already identified:
- creating an age friendly society
- helping to prepare and plan for later life
- importance of support to carry on living well in later life
- keeping support and information flowing to respond to changing circumstances
- Preparing for our ageing society – a discussion paper (733KB)

- Preparing for our ageing society – a summary of responses (495KB)
